Not much is known of Koujirou Shindo's early background with the exception of his previous work history and a few details regarding his mother.
What we do know is that his mother lives in Tokyo and appears to be living on her own. There is no mention of his father. However, she proves to be a capable individual that very clearly had a large impact on Shindo's own personality and habits. Although he is a workaholic of a certain degree, given the order to take a day off, visiting her is his first choice. They share a beer together and talk about the situation he's gotten himself into; showing that he clearly has a good relationship with her both as her son and as an adult-- she respects and yet still worries for him and vice versa.
But more than his home life, what we do hear is his background through his work. Prior to the series opening, he had just finished up at his job as a United Nations Policy Division Officer and was transferring to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs's Foreign Policy Bureau. Both his superiors and co-workers show both admiration and respect for his work and sense even further untapped potential that he seems to be reaching for.
His specific work is of that of a negotiator first and foremost. His skill is in working as a go-between for two parties, striving to find a solution that will ultimately give both what they want in a way that is beneficial not just in the short, but long run as well. He takes his work very seriously and it's clear that it takes up a great portion of his life. Even outside of the office we see him working while others have already gone to sleep and giving up vacation time that his partner was very excited for in order to finish a request.
It is onboard a plane, taking off after official business, that he is first introduced to Kado when the strange alien object appears and lands on the runway of Hanada Airport. Kado processed him and as a result he became aligned with the anisotropic; undergoing several changes that made him more mentally aware of the anisotropic. This, while he doesn't learn it until later, becomes the point at which he is able to maintain himself without sleep, due to his awareness of his full potential in the universe.
Through his encounter with zaShunina inside of Kado, he becomes the representative for the anisotropic, quitting his job with Foreign Affairs solely for the intention of not being held back by the position moving forward and allowing himself to put his all into what he is doing currently. He represents the unknown being's wishes, while Japan puts Saraka on their side to negotiate on their behalf.
As negotiations progress, zaShunina discloses that his wish is to help mankind progress, and for that reason he has brought several powerful devices from the anisotropic for them to use and distribute throughout all of humanity because of their innate nature to share with others. The first is an infinite power source. The second is a device that by looking at it, they will be attuned to the anisotropic and like Shindo, become aware of their maximum potential, allowing them to go without sleep if they so wish. The third and final had not yet been shared.
Saraka shared with Shindo her belief that zaShunina should be sent back and that humanity should not take the devices he had given them. While his opinion differed, he was interested in hearing her out. It is prior to this discussion that he was taken.
PERSONALITY: Shindo is a polite, kind-hearted individual who works hard first and foremost. He has a very personable way of talking to others that doesn't over-complicate things and is easy to understand. He is a very intelligent individual, capable of understanding even someone like zaShunina and the complicated situation better than most. But more importantly he knows how to take what is a very difficult concept and break it down in a way that anyone can learn and understand. Because of that, even with his position, it's hard to find him as someone intimidating. He doesn't treat people differently, regardless of who they are. Even zaShunina listens to him speak to him as he would anyone else, and when there's a misunderstanding between them, rather than work around it, he explains it to the other so that zaShunina can learn what he meant by it.
His kindness shows in many ways, but the most profound may be how far he goes out of his way to help others. In the very beginning, he is given a final assignment regarding the buyout of a building. However, rather than focusing on pushing the current business owner to sell, he works with them on researching a whole new method of production that will not only keep them in business but make them an asset to government projects in the future, going above and beyond the expectations of everyone involved. He puts himself on the level of the people that he's working with and tries to understand their emotional desires as well as their financial and other basic desires because he cares. It results in sleepless nights and cuts into his vacation, but he proudly takes a photo with all of them afterward, greatly satisfied by the outcome.
That is also to his detriment, however, in the future he has not yet seen. Even faced with those who would do him harm he still thinks as a negotiator and is even willing to put his life on the line to bring both sides together. He can be very single-minded and relentless, refusing to back down when it comes to his fundamental beliefs.
His relationships with his co-workers comes in various flavors. But one thing that several of them admit is that they love him. And that is something that he's earned from at least three different individuals, not including zaShunina's unique form of affection itself. He is admired not only for his work but for the way he does it. His compassion and drive attracts others. He is once described as someone who's looking for something more than he can do, something even bigger than the already high level jobs he's been assigned. He's always pushing himself and looking to surpass his own limits. He's the type of person who always wants to see how far he can go and always feels himself compelled by curiosity when he encounters something new.
While he knows when and where to focus and can be serious-minded, he enjoys teasing Hanamori-- the person he's worked with the most, who he says probably knows him even better than his mother in some regards. Likewise, he puts a great deal of faith in his friends like Hanamori; putting him in charge of challenging projects that he knows will be difficult but that he can excel in, even when Hanamori himself doesn't believe. He's aware he asks a lot of him by way of working together, but that's all the more reason that he tries to keep things light and take care of him when he can.
Shindo's take on zaShunina's gifts are of something that he believes will help humanity prosper and make them happy and that is why he chooses to continue to support zaShunina as he shares his gifts with Japan. Likewise, zaShunina interests Shindo a great deal because he's so different than anything he's ever known. It's his mother that has to point out to him that he's probably lonely in his own way because of the different social disconnect. Yet despite their differences he rather quickly makes the effort to treat him as an ally and friend, going out of his way to bring back books and even make him a bookmark for his reading.
For him, zaShunina feels like that "something more" that he was looking for and that draws him to him. He greatly enjoys being able to talk with him both about humanity and the things that zaShunina hopes to share with them. They connect both as beings and as intellectuals.
